loved this episode, never thought how much time traveling and prepareing for the classes, just gee the cost and two days plus the cost of fabrics and buying books etc, when a big name comes to the shops. Have always backed away from those classes, now I'll be taking a second look.

Show Time!
Alex & Ricky - Congratulations - it's show time! I have anxiously awaited this moment since Houston Quilt Fest where my girlfriend and I talked at length with Justin. He is perfect for PR. What a personality. His excitement and enthusiasm had us knowing, as we left the booth, that we would be able to continue learning and discovering what is new and innovative out there in the quilt world. I cherish all I have learned on Simply Quilts and am looking forward to what the two of you will bring to us. The best of luck. Heys and hugs from Texas

Favorite part of fabric
My favorite part of fabric is seeing the fabric someone else is having cut. The possibilities, the color combinations that someone else has selected. Are they a new quilter or is it a special gift for someone? It is seldomn that I resist getting a least a bit off the same bolt.

love Berninas
In my mind, there is no other sewing machine to have but a Bernina. When I decided to buy a new machine, I checked out consumer reportings and that's how I discovered Bernina. When I sewed on one, I was sold! They are so smooth and easy to sew on and trouble free. I love the service I get on them too, not that they need anything but a yearly check-up. I now have three and can't part with the one I bought 25 years ago. The dealer I bought it from told me that if I ever wanted to sell it that he would buy it back for the price I paid for it. Now I think they sell on Ebay for much more than that.

me too!
I am crazy about Bernina sewing machines too. I grew up sewing on a Singer and it gave me so much trouble -- the thread was always balling up in the bobbin case and sewing "bird's nests" under the fabric. I hated sewing! But when I found Berninas, I thought they sewed like a dream and have never sewn on anything since. They are wonderful, wonderful machines and one of the reasons I love to sew. Queeniect

Buying a Sewing Machine
With all of the choices these days when it comes to buying a sewing machine, this podcast was a good choice. I wish it would have included more information about other sewing machine brands because there are some very good ones out there, i.e., Elna and Pfaff. I own/have owned a Bernina Activa 135, which I sold, a Bernna 1300 serger, and the Bernina 200E which I recently upgraded to a 730E (BSR and software). I found that I didn't use it all that much and I ended up selling it. I now own an Elna Quilter's Dream, and I just love it. It comes with all the feet and stitch plates you need so you do not have to purchase these separately, i.e., the straight stitch plate and the 1/4-inch seam foot are just 2 of the many extras that come with this machine. It sews like a dream. I also own a Pfaff and especially like the built-in even feed foot. I usually use my Pfaff for stitch-in-the-ditch quilting and grid quilting as I don't have to stop and put a walking foot on. My Bernina sewed wonderfully, too, and I never had a problem with it. I just think it is good to keep an open mind and to remember that there are other good sewing machines out there to consider when it comes time to purchase a new one. Thanks, Alex, for your podcasts - I always look forward to them, and I can't wait for the first episode of The Quilt Show in April!

American Girl doll quilts
I too, have fallen in love with doll quilts. I collect reproduction fabric and love to make scrappy doll quilts. My absolute favorite book for patterns for these little quilts is called American Doll Quilts by Kathleen Tracy. She outlines the history of quilting to match the American Girl doll time periods. I have made all the quilts from the book and I even found her website which has some great free patterns for simple doll quilts. I am a stay at home mom. I have taught my daughter to sew and she loves making the quilts with me. We have so much fun picking just the right fabrics out of my scrap basket. Thanks again for drawing our attention to these wonderful little gems!!!

American Girl doll quilts
I was so excited to listen to Episode 51 this afternoon. I love being able to still hear you talking to all the fascinating quilters and hearing their ideas. Earlier this morning I was on the Internet looking for some small quilt patterns to try and ran across a website for American Girl doll quilts. My niece collects the dolls and I thought that would be fun to give her some quilts to go with them. This was the website I was on: http://www.womenfolk.com/baby_quilts/american-girl-dolls.htm I found out that there are period quilt directions for the dolls in the series. The directions also give the history of the quilt block in that particular time period. When I listened to Episode 51, I had to share this good news with you! Kim

I am thrilled that you made another podcast with Beverly to discuss doll quilts. The idea Beverly had to make a doll quilt to go along with a baby quilt for a new baby with an older sister was wonderful. Also, Alex, the idea you had to get little girls (or big girls like me) who love American Girl dolls interested in making quilts for them was a great idea. I want to have my 7 year old niece over to do just that. Thank you for everything you do to promote quilting.

I listened to this episode some time ago, and realized today, as I was listening to it again, that Paula Reid's comment re: sitting at her sewing machine for 15 minutes, even if it's just to clean it, was a GREAT suggestion! dedicated and then some!
I'm 32, have been quilting for about two years, have one machine and a quilting space (someday we will eat on the dining room table again!) I love to make small and miniature quilts. I use a lot of batique fabrics and anything "swirly" but will pretty much pick up any jelly roll I see. Small precise florals are starting to work their way into my stash. I would have to say I spend about $150 a month on quilt fabric, get togethers, new toys etc. Fabric comes from the local shop, I originally stocked up on starter tools (pins/rulers) from a chain store but have since started getting more specialized stuff (spinning mat, needles) from my quilt shop as well. Quilting has become the way I spend my free time and I look forward to doing so for many years to come!

Totally Dedicated
Yep, without a doubt, I am a dedicated quilter. I am standing in my studio at the moment, surrounded by fabric and tools. We had an unfinished attic space finished last spring to be my space and I have about 25 linear feet of fabric (with room to grow!). I treated myself to a new Bernina when the room was finished and still have a great old Singer. My monthly quilting budget is $130, or about $1500 per year. Since my favorite shop, where I was a part-time employee, closed last year, I went on a binge that I am still paying off. So, I have no doubt that I spend more than $2000 a year on quilting (and that's probably just fabric, books, and supplies and doesn't include quilt camp). I am way younger than the average quilter at 31, but I have been quilting almost as long as the average at 10 years. The last generation of quilters in my family were a few great-great grandmothers, but I am happy to report three quilters among my generation, including my younger sister who came to quilting kicking and screaming. (I asked her to help me make a double wedding ring for our grandparents and thought I had killed all quilting desire in her forever.) She's now a dedicated quilter on her own. :-)

quilting survey
Don't know if I qualify as a dedicated quilter quite yet....but not far from it! Have no idea of how much of our income goes to quilting. My sweet husband never complains as he realized I will probably never make up the difference of what he spends in hunting and fishing. I own three sewing machines. Two Janomes and an old singer from the 1950's. Two of my daughters have made quilts and recently have taught my mother modern quilting. My grandmother and great aunt quilted the old-fashioned by hand, template, and quilting frame on the back of chairs way. Though I love some of the very modern quilt patterns the more traditional types are still my favorites. Love Simply Quilts and the new podcasts. Kudo's Alex!

survey
I too found the survey interesting. I teach in a number of quilt shops in my area and can't wait to share some of this information with my students. Perhaps if they aren't dedicated quilters, they will get buying and soon join us there!! I am a dedicated quilter, sew about 30 hours per week, have my own space (the largest room in the house)and probably spend close to $3000 per year in fabric. (Actually, I started to track my spending in August to see how much I really do spend.) I probably won't share that information with my husband, although he has recently gotten the quilting bug and is working on his second quilt in four months. I have one machine (Bernina 180E)in the house now, as my daughter has my old Singer with her at college. I am looking at purchasing another machine within the next 3-6 months, especially if my husband continues to sew.
submitted by Joanne Quilts - Nov 22, '06     11:07pm
definitely a dedicated quilter here!
Wow, this is an amazing survey. It's wonderful in gaining a deeper understanding of where our industry is headed. I own two machines (Bernina 1080 and a Singer model 15). I started quilting about 12 + years go. I quilt (or stitch) at least 15 - 25 hours per week and spend more than I care to admit. Quilting is for me a source of pleasure and enjoyment and is turning into a way of life for me. Thanks for the survey!

To respond to your survey - I own a 153 Bernina, a 730 Bernina and a Singer Featherweight - a new one. On the issue of fabric purchases - I plead the 5th - what I say might incrimnate myself - but it is safe to say I am a REAL dedicated quilter! I am 45 years old - been quilting for 12 years. I respect and honor traditional quilts but I especially love art quilts. This (quilting/fabric/fiber arts) is my passion and my home.

Quilting Survey
I found the survey info very interesting. I have three daughters and they are all very interested in quilting and sewing. Either as the recipient of quilts, as well as creating their own. I'm curious about the new generation of quilters, they seem to be looking for their own niche'. Not contemporary, or traditional, but something more utilitarian in style it seems. None of my daughters want to use patterns, they just see something they like, and try to recreate in there own fashion. I own 2 machines (1 prchsd in the last year), and my youngest (17) has her own machine. I'm scared of trying to figure out how much fabric I own...lots! Keep up the good work!

Congratulations
Congratulations on the award Alex. It was a pleasure to meet you at the Festival. You are even more beautiful and friendly in person. Meeting you, Eleanor Burns, and Ricky Tims was the highlight of my festival experience.

Congratulations
Can't think of anyone who deserves the award more. I wonder how many of us (relatively) new quilters fell into this obsession because of your show. Thank you. I just wish I had high speed.

Fabric Purchasing
Bunny's comments on how she purchases fabric reminds me of a recent visit to a quilt shop in northern Wisconsin. I was told by the owner she only stocks fabrics and patterns that she likes. We must have the same tastes since I felt right at home.

Thanks
Thanks for this episode. I sure hope the industry will consider that some of us cannot get access to high speed internet where we live. I'm lucky right now to have access at work, but soon I won't even have that. Boo hoo for me. Thanks again, Alex.

This is awesome!
Thanks so much for another fun episode. Quilt Market sounds like such a fun adventure! I'm eagerly awaiting Alexandra's appearance at my lqs! I don't know though, if I would let Mark Lipinski take a look through my purse - though then again I might as I'd be a little in awe of the personality! Happy Quilting, Teri
