Kindergarten Quilt Project
02/27/01
The children in the Kindergarten Class at Celentano School in New Haven Ct. have been working on many exciting quilt projects by integrating quilting into their math, language arts, and social studies curriculum. Pictured are some of the children holding appliqué quilt blocks donated by our new friends all over the United States. We have had many people donating a quilt block, but we are still in need of a friend from the following states: Delaware, Hawaii, Idaho, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Virginia, West Virginia, Wyoming, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Mexico, New York, & North Dakota. The unfinished quilt block needs to be 10 1/2 inches unfinished. Please appliqué the shape of your state. Any colors can be used, but only one 100% cotton. We also ask that the name of the state and the person's name be printed on the quilt block. We ask that anyone interested please contact Patty Cawley, kindergarten teacher at: stagger1@ix.netcom.com ... =)

Happy Thanksgiving !!!
11/19/00

One of my all time favorite holidays is Thanksgiving. It’s a time for family, friends and reflection on how fortunate we are. During the season of autumn you will find quilts hanging all over my home reflecting a fall theme, bringing the beauty of the changing season right into the home. But what about the dining room table? You needn’t stop there! This little wall hanging is from my Start Quilting book and took only a few hours to make. It is the perfect start for the centerpiece. For the centerpiece itself, simply stack two clear pedestal dishes and pile them high with mini pumpkins, pomegranates, grapes and leaves. The gold candles are assorted sizes and heights. Other than the price of the candles, this centerpiece was a lot of fun to create and quite inexpensive. Just use what you have at home and what is available at your local grocery store. To all my dear quilting buddies, Happy Thanksgiving to you!

Improving the Message Board
11/16/00
ok ok OK.... time to announce the next BIG thing for AAQ!! More specifically the Message Board. For those of you who were on the message board before a few weeks ago, you probably remember those little quilt star images that would sit right next to Alex's, mine, or Tobin's name.... WELL, soon they'll be back, but available to EVERYONE!! .. not just that star either.. Here's how it's going to work... I'm going to create a large library of tiny symbols like that star, and you all have the option of selecting one of those images to accompany your name on the message board!! ... this will help with confusion that may be arising from similar names, AND yeah, make the board look even more festive :) ...so how do you set your preference to which image you want?? ... Well, we're going to create a more official ONLINE COMMUNITY on AAQ!! EVERYONE will have the option of creating their own bio page, where you can share lots of information about yourself, as well as select which symbol you want to accompany your name on the message board! On the board, anyone can then click on these symbols and bring up your bio page! Your symbol will also appear on other pages, such as the Block Party. If you have submitted a block, the symbol will appear there next to your name too!! Oh, and all info is optional, you can submit as much or as little info as you are comfortable with for your bio page. SOOOOOOO.... here's what we need from everyone now... 1) suggestions for those little symbols... (stars, baskets, spool of thread, a rose, etc.) ... 2) suggestions for topic headers for the bio pages... name, email, favorite block, astrological sign(?), favorite quote, etc... ok OK I've written a BOOK here!! But you get the idea... Everyone has helped to create such a wonderful community here, time to make it stronger and give it more structure. You guys deserve it! ....thoughts? E-mail me @ back2matt@hotmail.com ...also, check out the master list of all the symbols requested so far.

Habitat for Humanity 2000
10/17/00
This past September I had the privilege to participate in a blitz for Habitat for Humanity. The goal was to build 10,000 homes all over the world in just one week! HGTV flew me and other Show Hosts to Knoxville, TN, where we hammered, scraped and painted our brains out. The house we worked on was sponsored by HGTV and built in a neighbor hood of twenty other new Habitat Homes. It was one of my top ten best of life experiences. The owner, Cecil, was delightful and pounded nails side by side with us. Of all the twenty homes being built we WON, because ours was completed in just 5 days…..I guess the reality is that everyone who participated was a winner. I can't wait to do it again!

Many hands lightened the load.

Sandra (from Sew Perfect) and Alex getting lessons on how to install siding.

The local Baptist Church provided 1,500 lunches for hungry workers, even peanut butter and jelly looked good!
