Yehaw!
07/13/02
YeHaw! Wondering who the handsome cowboy is standing next to me? Well, it’s Martin Favre, president of Bernina USA. I was invited to attend Bernina University in Dallas, Texas where Bernina was thrilled to be introduce their new top of the line machine. Other than this new machine stealing the show, it could only be topped by Martin riding into the opening ceremonies on a long horned steer!

Freedom Quilts
05/12/02
I received this heart felt letter from Betty Nielson who has undertaken an enormous task of providing thousands of quilts for the victims families of 911. If you missed the opportunity to participate with the Lexie Love Project and want to make a quilt, here is your chance to help out.

Dear Alex,

My name is Betty Nielsen and I'm with Freedom Quilts resulting of Sept. 11th. As I watched the events unfold that day, I asked in prayer what I could do. When the answer was to make quilts, it scared me because I was a beginner. With the help of many people, we soon had 1,554 quilts that we took to New York to present to victims families at Pier 94. You might have seen me on Good Morning America on Dec 17 presenting Arlene Tipping (who lost her son) a quilt. After coming home I knew in my heart that more quilts had to be made. The pain and sorrow of the families was overwhelming. I witnessed first hand how the quilts provided comfort They were truly gifts from the heart, made from hands of fellow Americans the recipients didn't even know. Eileen Mosca lost her sister at the World Trade Center and her quote was that the quilt she received at Pier 94 was worth more then a million dollars. She went on to say that she sleeps with her quilt every night and was moved to tears realizing that hundreds of people at the festival were skipping the donated toys and leaving with American Flags and quilts. The depth of their gratitude was incredible.

When I went to New York I had the intention of gifting one quilt per family, but soon realized that was not enough. There were so many children, young mothers, parents, and grandparents of victims left shattered that my heart broke inside. Please stop and think that when you lose someone it effects more then just one person, hence the need of more quilts. I know I can't do this on my own, I need help. I need material, batting, and donations, however most importantly completed quilts. I have gone to bed crying due to the fact that I know I can't do this on my own, but I must complete what has been asked of me. I plan to return to NY in July and again in Dec or Jan with more quilts.

Please check out my website at www.freedomquilts.net to learn more about this project. If you know of any quilters who can help please contact me at:

A Heartfelt Response
02/20/02
The Quilting Lexies of USA/Canada,

Thank you so much for the flannel crib quilt you sent to our family. We appreciate all the time and effort that went into this project. Our son, Brian Sweeney, was one of the firefighters killed in the attack on the World Trade Center. The thoughtfulness and caring from people like yourselves helps to comfort us during this difficult time. Thank you again for your kindness.

Sincerely,

The family of Brian Sweeney

Here is the picture of the quilt that the Lexie buddies on the messge board made for me! It was presented to me at the AAQ retreat this fall. Aunt Ann orchestrated the project, Suij pieced it together and Paula Reid machine quilted it. WOW! It is terrific. I love it to pieces and will treasure it always :0). !

Questions and Answers

Dear Alex:

Q: Does it upset you when a quilt just doesn't work?
A: Everyone has had a bad quilt experience. You can't take it personally or get upset. You just have to deal with it in your own special way.

Project Bear Hug
07/17/01
My name is Ali Janowitz. I'm a sixteen year old junior in high school and have recently begun a project called Project Bear Hug. We make quilts for disadvantaged premature infants, with and without diseases, such as AIDS, for a local nursery. Also, we make stuffed bears for the police to give to traumatized children when they have occasion to come into contact with them for various reasons. We are working very hard and have gotten some help in the form of donations of fabric. My group and I have made 15 baby quilts so far and we are expecting some from two other girls who do community service by making baby quilts.

My purpose in writing this is to request help from a larger group of people than I would normally come in contact with, whether in the form of materials or money or actual quilts. This is a very worthwhile cause as these children are quite needy.

Your support would be greatly appreciated. I can be reached at ProjectBearHug@aol.com. Thank you very much.

Project Bear Hug can be found at www.ProjectBearHug.org
